Per-viewer watermarking
Every viewer sees the same document carrying their own identity. If a page turns up somewhere it should not, the mark on it says who opened it.

What it does
Watermarking stamps each viewer's identity onto the document they see, discouraging a screenshot from circulating without a trace back to who opened it.
Because the mark is tied to the viewer rather than to the file, two people who each open the same document with their own email see two differently marked pages. One leaked screenshot is therefore attributable, which is the point: the deterrent is knowing the copy is identifiable, not preventing the screenshot itself.
Why it pairs with the access gate
A watermark identifies a viewer you have already identified. That is why it works alongside the verified-email gate and one-time codes rather than instead of them: the gate establishes who is opening the room, and the watermark carries that identity onto the page.
On a link that does not ask for an email, the mark reads 'Viewer' and the date, so the two features are worth turning on together when the document genuinely matters.

When the link asks for an email, yes. The mark carries the address each person opened it with, plus the date, so two people see two differently marked pages. A link that does not ask for an email marks every page 'Viewer' and the date, so turn the email gate on wherever attribution matters.
The watermark is drawn over every page in our viewer rather than written into the file, so a downloaded copy carries none. Where attribution matters, leave download off on the link: that keeps readers in the marked view. It deters rather than locks, because the document still reaches the viewer's browser to be displayed.
Business and above. The free and Pro plans include the access controls, including verified-email gating and link expiry, but not per-viewer watermarking.
