What it does

Time spent per page and how far through a document a viewer got, so you can tell a thorough read from a quick skim before you follow up.

What to do with it, and what not to

The useful reading is comparative. One viewer spending four times as long on the financials as on everything else tells you what the follow-up conversation is about. A single absolute number tells you very little.

It is worth saying plainly that attention is not agreement. A long dwell on one page can mean the section is persuasive or that it is confusing, and the metric cannot distinguish them. It points you at the question rather than answering it.

What it does not do

It measures attention, not intent. A long dwell can mean interest or confusion, and the number cannot tell you which.
